Tástáil CAT4 – Eolas do Thuismitheoirí

Úsáidimid an Tástáil Chumas Cognaíocha (CAT4) chun tuiscint níos fearr a fháil ar conas a fhoghlaimíonn daltaí agus chun tacú lena bhforbairt acadúil. Ní scrúdú traidisiúnta é CAT4 ar eolas foghlamtha; ina ionad sin, tomhaiseann sé cumais réasúnaíochta atá tábhachtach don fhoghlaim i ngach ábhar.

Cén fáth a n-úsáidimid CAT4?

Soláthraíonn CAT4 próifíl de láidreachtaí foghlama an dalta i gceithre réimse:

  • Réasúnaíocht Bhriathartha – smaoineamh le focail
  • Réasúnaíocht Neamhbhriathartha – tuiscint ar chruthanna agus patrúin
  • Réasúnaíocht Chainníochtúil – obair le huimhreacha
  • Cumas Spásúil – samhlú agus láimhseáil cruthanna go meabhrach
  • Úsáidtear na torthaí chun pleanáil ceachta a fheabhsú, chun tacú le daltaí a bhfuil tacaíocht nó dúshlán breise ag teastáil uathu, agus chun straitéisí foghlama a threorú.

Cathain a dhéantar CAT4?

  • Conas a dhéantar an tástáil?

Is measúnú amaithe é CAT4 a dhéantar ar ríomhaire faoi choinníollacha foirmiúla. Tá samplaí cleachtaidh i ngach cuid chun a chinntiú go dtuigeann daltaí an fhormáid sula dtosaíonn siad. Tá an tástáil cothrom agus inrochtana, beag beann ar eolas roimh ré.

An gá ullmhú don CAT4?

Níl gá le hullmhúchán. Tá CAT4 cosúil le tástáil súl – tomhaiseann sé cumas nádúrtha, ní ábhar foghlamtha. D’fhéadfadh cleachtadh roimh ré tionchar a imirt ar iontaofacht na dtorthaí.

Cad a tharlaíonn tar éis na tástála?

Faigheann múinteoirí tuairisc mhionsonraithe a léiríonn próifíl foghlama an dalta agus táscairí ar fheidhmíocht amach anseo. Úsáidtear an t-eolas seo in éineacht le sonraí eile sa seomra ranga chun tacú le teagasc agus foghlaim.

Conas is féidir le tuismitheoirí an Tuairisc a Úsáid?

Léiríonn an tuairisc láidreachtaí agus réimsí le forbairt. Úsáid í chun:

Spreagadh a thabhairt i réimsí láidre.
Tacú le réimsí lag trí ghníomhaíochtaí praiticiúla (m.sh. puzail do scileanna spásúla, cluichí focail do réasúnaíocht bhriathartha).
Tuig nach réamh-mheastachán iomlán é CAT4 – cuid amháin den phictiúr foghlama atá ann.
Pléigh an tuairisc leis na múinteoirí chun straitéisí a phleanáil don obair bhaile agus don staidéar.

CAT4 Cognitive Abilities Test – Information for Parents

At Coláiste an Eachréidh, we use the Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT4) to help understand how students learn and to support their academic development. CAT4 is not a test of learned knowledge like a traditional exam. Instead, it measures reasoning abilities that are important for learning across all subjects.

Why do we use CAT4?

CAT4 provides a profile of each student’s learning strengths in four key areas:

  • Verbal Reasoning – thinking with words
  • Non-Verbal Reasoning – understanding shapes and patterns
  • Quantitative Reasoning – working with numbers
  • Spatial Ability – visualising and manipulating shapes mentally
  • The results help teachers plan lessons, identify where extra support or challenge is needed, and guide discussions about learning strategies.

When is CAT4 administered?

  • Level E: Taken by First Year students during their first week in school.
  • Level G: Taken by Transition Year students as part of their learning review and future planning.
  • How is the test carried out?

CAT4 is a timed assessment completed using a computer under formal conditions. Each section includes practice examples so students understand the question format before starting. The test is designed to be fair and accessible, regardless of prior knowledge.

Should students prepare for CAT4?

No preparation is needed or recommended. CAT4 is like an eye test—it measures natural ability, not learned content. Practising beforehand can affect the reliability of the results.

What happens after the test?

Teachers have access to a detailed report showing each student’s learning profile and indicators of future performance. This information is used alongside other classroom data to support teaching and learning.

How can parents use the Parent Report?

The report highlights your child’s learning strengths and areas for development.

Use it to:

  • Encourage your child in areas of strength.
  • Support weaker areas with practical activities (e.g., puzzles for spatial skills, word games for verbal reasoning).
  • Understand that CAT4 does not predict success in isolation—it’s one piece of the learning picture.
  • Discuss the report with teachers to plan strategies for homework and study.
